Using Reverse Osmosis to Purify Your Drinking Water

Reverse osmosis has become a common way to purify drinking water. How effective it is depends on the level of contamination. With all of the contaminants and pollutants in the air and ground today, purifying your water will make it safer to drink.

There are several water filtration methods, including using a water softener or water filters to clean the water. A water purifier can be used to purify water that may carry unknown bacteria or viruses such as if you should drink from a well or spring.

Reverse osmosis can be used to treat water that has a bad color, smell, or taste caused by natural substances. It’s also used to purify water that has been contaminated by foreign substances, especially dissolved solids that can pass through other filtration methods. It has been used to remove salt from sea water to make it usable.

Membranes with fine openings large enough for water to pass through but not other substances is the basis of reverse osmosis. Some membranes have an electrical charge that rejects the substances at the membrane surface.

Reverse osmosis systems are mainly used to purify drinking and cooking water.
They aren’t practical for the entire house because of the amount of waste water that the process generates. It also takes a long time to generate water, usually only 2 to 10 gallons per day.

The reverse osmosis system contains a pre-filter which separates some of the contaminants and prolongs the life of the system. The membrane can be made of various materials and choosing which one to use depends on the kinds of substances to be removed.

This system has long been popular for commercial uses but not as well known with residential customers due to the slow rate of filtration and high amount of wasted water. The advantage of using them is the amount of contaminants removed.

When deciding if one of these systems is right for you, the first step is testing your water. This will let you know what substances are in the water and at what level. Then you can find out which system works best for your needs.
